Review: The Truth About You & Me

Hello All!

It's been what, forever since I posted?  And probably longer than that since I actually posted a review!

I want to give my review style a face-lift, but alas I am still not familiar enough with blogger to do so.  Instead, you shall have to deal with the old way, because at least I have a review to share!!

Title: The Truth About You & Me
Author: Amanda Grace
Rating: 5/5

Summary:

Smart girls aren't supposed to do stupid things.
Madelyn Hawkins is super smart. At sixteen, she's so gifted that she can attend college through a special program at her high school. On her first day, she meets Bennett. He's cute, funny, and kind. He understands Madelyn and what she's endured - and missed out on - in order to excel academically and please her parents. Now, for the first time in her life, she's falling in love.
There's only one problem. Bennett is Madelyn's college professor, and he thinks she's eighteen - because she hasn't told him the truth.
The story of their forbidden romance is told in letters that Madelyn writes to Bennett - both a heart-searing ode to their ill-fated love and an apology.

Review:

I don't usually do straight-up romance stories, without a devastating twist.  Yes, there is definitely a twist to this romance, but it's not to my normal level.

The first thing that caught me was the cover, it's simple and beautiful, and for once it didn't look like your typical YA romance book.  The format caught me next, the entire book is composed of letters (mostly one) from the underage Madelyn, to her love and mental savior, Bennett.  And the way Madelyn tells their story makes it hard to fault her for falling for a man she isn't allowed to have.

Their love affair is simple, not some scandalous tryst, and it made me long for one of my own (granted I'm long past that 16 age of consent mark).  It was the simple way in which she described the way that Bennett helped her see a way off the path forged by her parents and treated her with respect that was heart-warming.

Unfortunately we don't get Bennett's side of the story aside from his actions, and since Madelyn is writing the letters to show Bennett in a positive way, we don't see much insight into his struggle with considering dating a girl younger than him.  I wish we had seen more of his nature (past actions), however I think the lack of his point of view amplified Madelyn's love and heartbreak to the point that I thought it deserved 5 stars.

On a side note, this is the first book I've finished in 2014!  Let's see if I can finish a few more before my semester starts again and I can't read anything not assigned in class.

  1. I'm not a big romance reader myself, but this sounds like one to take a chance on! Congrats on finishing your first 2014er; I've yet to finish one, lol.
